There are, of course, block lists you can subscribe to thanks to #Gamergate, but I’ve always felt a little iffy about them.
Lindy West just pointed out a browser plugin I hadn’t been aware of that can let you block anyone following or being followed by someone:
You can get the Firefox version of it here:
I’ve currently got it running on @Always_Trump’s followers page and am typing this in another tab. It’s running happily in the background, crunching through all twenty thousand assholes to see how well it works. I could definitely see this choking on a computer that isn’t as hefty as mine.
Once you’ve installed it, you navigate to someone’s followers or following page and click this button:
If, like I’m doing now, you’re on a page with tens of thousands of accounts, it will take a while to run through all of them. If you interrupt it by trying to navigate to another page on the same tab, it can apparently fuck up the loading of images on Twitter the next time you come back.
Even on my system, it’s taken several minutes to get through 4000.
While it’s running, it displays this helpful tally:
“Found” means how many accounts it’s seen so far on the page. It sees them by scrolling to the bottom of the page repeatedly to make more load. It doesn’t count accounts that have already been blocked, though.
For pages with massive quantities of accounts listed, you’ll want another plugin that can block images from loading. This will drastically increase the speed at which more accounts are loaded and reduce the amount of RAM being eaten. In Firefox, I’m using this one:
For Chrome, this one should work:
Enjoy!
